Preventing Thinning Hair

Preventing Thinning Hair
It is important to your hair that throughout time you take care of it and keep it healthy, this will prevent hair fall and thinning as you age. It is natural to experience hair thinning as you grow older but you could help to prevent it from happening as quickly, and so much at a time by doing some very simple things! Here are a few tips and do’s and don’t for keeping your hair from thinning out and becoming damaged!

1. Do not tie your hair elastic too tight on your ponytail or bun, you can tie it tight enough for hold but doing an unnecessary amount of tightness can cause breakage to the hair, thus resulting in thinning hair issues.

2. Detangle your hair before you shower. Detangling your hair gently before you get in the shower it is extremely important to remove the tangles before you shampoo! As you shampoo you naturally pull hair out, you don’t try to and it’s normal for it happen but the less tangly your hair is, the less amount of hair you will pull out as you shampoo.

3. Try not to yank on your hair so much when you brush it. Whether that be wet or dry! Wet especially though, you should always use something with wide teeth, such as a wide tooth comb. This puts less stress on the hair, cause less breakage as you brush, also resulting in hair staying in tact and less thinning.

4. Use some sort of hair oil. Vitamin E is very good for keeping your hair healthy and keeping it there! If you are experiencing hair loss, the intake of Vitamin E will help tremendously in the aid of keeping your hair healthy and growing.

5. When your hair is wet, don’t rub it dry with a towel. Not only does this make your hair frizzy when it dries, but it also causes weakness in the hair, resulting in breakage!

With each pregnancy I lost more and more hair. I remember standing in the shower and pulling out clumps of hair. It freaked me out at first. Most the time it grew back, but never like it was.

Do you have any tips to add?

I have naturally curly hair that I treat so it's straight, but I lose A LOT of hair, but I lose much less now that it's straight.

My hair has been falling out like crazy for the last few months from over-processing and under vitamanizing. These are really great tips!

  5. We have well water, and it is REALLY rough on my hair. I now use Suave's Almond & Shea shampoo and conditioner, and it is the best thing I have found in a long time. If you have dry, frizzy or curly hair (mine is all three!) it works wonders!

  7. I completely agree with this list! I've heard "When your hair is wet, don’t rub it dry with a towel" before and ever since I stopped doing that my hair has gotten so much stronger.

  8. I've only recently began experimenting with oil in my hair. I have a thyroid disorder and I lose massive amounts of hair no matter what I do. On top of that, I have very fine hair so tangles are unavoidable which doesn't help any. I noticed when using oil, my hair tangled less. I've still yet to find a brand I like though.

  11. I have extremely thick, full hair so hair loss is always an issue for me. I just have way too much hair so I don't really mind a little hair loss. It's like my scalp is revolting from all the weight, but I can imagine how hard it is for people who don't have thick, full hair like I do to experience hair loss.

  12. My sister was having trouble with her hair thinning, but for some reason it just stopped. I am going to send this to her… just in case.

I am so guilty of a few of those. I run and my hair is always pulled tight with an elastic hair tie, if not it falls down and then causes all kinds of issues. The towel drying is also an issue I have – I guess I need to treat my hair a little better.

I never lost or had thin hair during pregnancy but I can definitely see it happening to some. Hope it gets thicker if that's what your wanting.

  21. I didn't know about the Vitamin E. I'm definitely going to add that to my routine!

  22. This is a very informative post. I will definitely take a few pointers from it. I no longer shampoo my hair every wash I find this very effective for me.

  23. great tips! and I'm guilty of doing a lot of rubbing my hair with a towel, and I wear a lot of ponytails. yikes!

  26. I treat my hair like crap. Nuff said. Sadly, it's true. I recently cut it though it was long and the bottom half was thinning so I chopped off 12 inches and am trying really hard to treat it nicely. I do tie it back still for workouts but I'm trying! Nice tips

  28. These are great tips. However, many times hormones are also responsible for thinning hair. Like you it happened to me after pregnancy too.

  29. I've been lucky, I've always had thick hair and far too much of it. As I get older, it just grows even more. Is it the redhead gene or am I cursed? I do nothing special for my hair, except I rarely have it tied up, because elastics give me headaches.

  30. Does Vitamin E work for male thinning hair as well?
