How to Keep Kids Safe Online #KidsWifi (Giveaway)

As you can probably guess, one of the biggest concerns most parents face these days is how to keep their kids safe online. Obviously, you can’t monitor every minute of your child’s computer time. It’s virtually impossible. Children are online at home, on their phones, at school, at work and at their friends homes. Giving clear guidelines and setting rules are important.  Nobody wants to be watching over their child’s shoulder 24/7. However, the following tips go a long way in helping to ensure kids stay as safe as possible, while perusing the Internet.

How to Keep Kids Safe Online

Password Protection

Instill in your children how important it is to never share their passwords with anyone. This includes their best friends and in some instances even certain relatives. You never know when someone might get angry or jealous and attempt to cause harm in whatever way they can think of.

Location, Location, Location

If possible, it’s wise to keep your family computer in a location where you can easily monitor what your children are up to. It’s no secret that the majority of kids want to surf the Internet in the privacy of their own room. But, it isn’t always a good idea. This is especially true when a child is overly trusting or a bit naive, as many children have a tendency to be.

Log Out Every Time

Teach your kids to log out after every computer session, even if they’re going to get back online fairly quickly. This prevents anyone else from using their e-mail or social media accounts to wreak havoc or simply in a joking manner.

Take Full Advantage of Parental Settings

You’d probably be surprised by the number of parents who don’t realize they have more control over their kid’s online activities than they think. Many Internet service providers include safety features as part of their monthly rate. This includes options to limit features such as instant messaging, chat and e-mail, dependent on the child’s age, time constraints, etc.

Go one step further by taking advantage of the parental control options attached to whatever browser you’re using as well. Keep in mind, however, that this won’t completely guarantee that your children will be safe online, 100% of the time. But, it does make a huge difference.

Privacy Matters

Many children, especially the younger ones, don’t fully realize the consequences of sharing personal information with others. Teach your kids not to share ANY personal information without your permission, not to open e-mail from people they don’t know, not to meet up with anyone  they meet online and not to respond to disturbing messages.

These are just a few things you can do, in effort to keep your kids safe online. One of the best things about all of these options is the fact that they’re easy to put into place and often become part of your routine. Obviously you will need to adjust according to your child’s age. Remember, as the old adage goes… “It’s always better to be safe than sorry!
