4 Great Travel Spots for You and the Kids

Tired of the usual places? Just can’t afford the Magic Kingdom this year? Many excellent, fun and affordable travel spots exist that offer a range of activities and educational opportunities for a family. Places like the Grand Canyon and the local zoo are obvious choices, but here are four destinations you might not have considered. All are very affordable. Each has interactive exhibits to experience, not just tour, the destination.  Delta flights are available at reasonable rates to most locations.
Mesa Verde National Park – Southwestern Colorado
Ancient Pueblo Hisatsinom dwellings, some dating back nearly a thousand years, are surprisingly well-preserved. Many are open to the public. They may be investigated with the aid of well-informed Park Rangers who lead visitors on a climb up to glimpse a living history lesson witnessed by few living people.
Mesa Verde’s Pueblo dwellings truly offer a three-dimensional history lesson on the Native Americans who thrived there long before Europeans claimed these shores. Children are encouraged to grind corn at the Long House. Many other activities are also available. Spruce Tree House and Step House are open to be explored on your own.
The Bio-Bays pf Puerto Rico
A bio bay contains micro-organisms called dinoflagellates. Agitating the water makes these micro-organisms glow in the dark for an instant. A kayak trip through the bay, with fairy lights rushing through the water all around you, is an inexpressible wonder — and living science lesson — your family will remember for years to come.
Three bioluminescent bays exist — one in southwestern Puerto Rico, La Parguera, one in Mosquito Bay and the most famous one, La Laguna Grande, in Fajardo. Mosquito Bay is the brightest, but La Laguna Grande is most convenient from San Juan. Affordable Delta flights are available into San Juan and La Laguna Grande isn’t far. San Juan is also a big city with many great cultural and artistic attributes beyond the bays.
Dinosaur Valley State Park — Glen Rose, Texas
Many children love dinosaurs. They’re almost as cool as dragons! Dinosaur Valley State Park has some of the best-preserved dinosaur tracks in existence. The Park Ranger dinosaur trackers go through wet Paluxy riverbeds so it’s best to go when it’s warm. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet. You’ll also be able to swim in the Blue Hole where dinosaurs once walked.
Kennedy Space Center – Cape Canaveral, Florida
Many kids love the space program. Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral offers a peek into one of the great miracles of our age, space exploration. There’s a flight simulator that takes you behind the wheel of a virtual space shuttle. Mission Control tours and other family friendly events are great fun and educational.
Of course, there are many other great destinations, like Plimouth Plantation in Plymouth, Massachusetts. The best family vacation destinations offer more than a pretty place and opportunities to relax. They extend the possibility of experiencing something educational as a family. This is the best way to build and rebuild family bonds. It will also give a family memories to last a lifetime.
