Winter time in Canada gets really cold. I personally do not enjoy the cold weather. I keep inside most of the winter and patiently wait for the Spring to arrive. My children love the snow and often will go out and make snowmen, forts and have snowball fights. But when it is cold, they want no part of it. Cold like we have had it for the last few days kind of cold. Cold where the schools keep the kids inside because they would freeze if they sent them out.
So what are families to do when they are stuck inside for days, weeks at a time? We build forts and we read, a lot. Some of our favourites are quick picture books and really funny rhyming books. Recently Scholastic Canada sent us some that are perfect for winter reading.
Little Jack Horner, Live from the Corner
Old MacDonald had a dog… didn’t he?
When Little Jack Horner steps out of the corner to sing a simple song, things get complicated.
This hilarious tale features favourite nursery rhyme characters and a little song you thought you knew. It all adds up to some seriously silly times down at Ma Goose Farms.
Ages 3-7 ($7.99)
My Friend Henry
Ages 3-6 ($16.99)
Have you seen my best friend Henry? He’s small, with curly hair, big dark eyes, freckles on his nose and a huge smile!
“Where is Henry?” His best friend is looking all over for him in this charming picture book. Whimsical art and a premise that will hook young readers (where is my best friend?) build a sweet story that ends with a satisfying twist. It turns out that Henry is missing for a very good reason!
The story takes the reader through familiar neighbourhood spots — the park, the grocery store, a bakery — with a counting element built into the telling. Bright art is the perfect backdrop for the child’s emotional journey. And when he finds his best friend and discovers why he was missing, readers will delight in the joyful reunion.
Captain Underpants and the Revolting Revenge of the Radioactive Robo-Boxers
Ages 7+ $10.99
When we last saw our heroes, George and Harold, they had been turned into evil zombie nerds doomed to roam a devastated, postapocalyptic planet for all eternity. But why, you might ask, didn’t the amazing Captain Underpants save the boys from this frightening fate? Because Tippy Tinkletrousers and his time-traveling hijinks prevented George and Harold from creating Captain Underpants in the first place! Now, having changed the course of human history forever, they’ll have to figure out a way to CHANGE IT BACK.
Could this be the end for Captain Underpants?!!
We always look forward to the Scholastic book orders coming from the school. It is great that the orders help the schools bring books into the class room as well. At Christmas our daughter’s teacher gave them to the class as gifts.
Do you have a book you like to cuddle up with your kids and read?
I loved when my daughter was in elementary and the flyer would come out…they ALWAYS had at least one book that was a buck, but we usually ended up spending $10 LOL
Haha, Captain Underpants! Will have to pick this up for DS, he'll love it.
I absolutely adore Scholastic! They offer lots of Canadian books as well as educational games and toys for all school ages. I used to love flipping through the flyers, trying to decide which books to pick. Now, my daughters do the same! The fact that they have promoted literacy for all these years is wonderful.
THanks for the post! The kids are in the mood for some new reading material.
Loved Scholastic books since I was a child. How wonderful that I can pass this love of reading to my kids.
Ok, So I thought is was freeing here. I hate the cold and it has been around 2 degrees here. It is a massive struggle for me to head outside in that. But I do love the indoor snuggle time with my kids and a good book.
