Why I am still excited for my cruise in March

cruise ship

Cruise ships have been front in centre on the news for the past week.  The story of the beleaguered Carnival Triumph has splashed the front pages of newspapers and headlined television reports.  It is everyone’s worst nightmare – a vacation gone horribly wrong.

In less than four weeks my family will be boarding a Carnival cruise ship heading for a Caribbean vacation.  We booked the cruise almost a year ago and have been counting down the days ever since.  Are we nervous?  Have we thought about cancelling?

It’s as simple as that.  No.  We haven’t questioned our decision for a moment.  Cruising is our favorite way to vacation and while the experience of the passengers on the Triumph was horrendous; it is not a typical experience.  More than 19 million people cruise every year.  With that many people cruising, unfortunately there is bound to be issues.

As someone who worked for a cruise line for more than a year, cruise ships are amazing, intricate and complicated vessels.  Even after seeing all of the inner workings of the ship and the challenges of being a crew member, my husband and I were eager to travel as passengers.  Cruising is remarkable as a passenger.  From gourmet 5 star meals to Broadway style shows, to a free (included in the price) child care program there is something for everyone.

What am I most looking forward to?  Relaxing.  Room service every mornin, drinks by the pool, ports of call I haven’t been to, and the joy of taking a family vacation where fun is the main priority.  I think it’s the perfect vacation.

While I am sad that the passengers of the Carnival Triumph had to experience a ship malfunction and a long arduous return to port.  I can’t wait to pack my bags and set sail.  Only 25 more sleeps!
