Why I didn’t watch the Oscars last night

oscars

Since before I was a teenager I used to watch the Oscars EVERY year.  I loved them!

I first watched with my mom and marveled at the beauty of the dresses and magic that seemed to surround the show.  I laughed at the opening montages, and dreamt about one day going.  Sitting in the audience and being part of the spectacle.

Strangely I never liked acting, so not sure how I thought I was going to get there!

As a teenager and then as a University student I loved watching it with friends.  We filled out fake ballots, competed to see who got the most right and the best part, we made a point of seeing EVERY movie shown in the major categories.  I felt so knowledgeable watching the show.  I had experienced the movies, I had my favorites and I was sure I knew who would win.

I think I have watched more than 20 Oscars.

But, last night, I didn’t watch it.

Why?  Because, I really don’t enjoy the show now that I rarely see the nominated films.

Since having kids I don’t get to the movies very often and I certainly can’t make it to the nearest big city (more than 2 hours away) to catch a film like I did only a few short years ago.

This year I saw three of the big pictures, more than last year that is for sure.  So, while I wasn’t watching I did hope that Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook and Skyfall would win some awards so I could feel part of the conversation at work today.

While I lament not seeing all of those great movies I am just as happy to know that my movie time this year was largely spent watching Thomas the Tank Engine with my little boys.

Did you watch the Oscars?  What was your favorite film?

Kerrie blogs at Family Food and Travel.  She is a mom of twin boys (born March 2010) who she often refers to as the ‘twinado’.  Kerrie loves, writing, travel, photography, and fabulous food.  Prior to kids, Kerrie was an avid reader and scrapbooker and hopes to one day return to those activities.  Kerrie once considered herself successful, that was until she attempted toilet training twins.

  1. I didn't watch this year…normally I PVR and buzz through…but I heard mixed reviews on the opening act and that Seth MacFarlane wasn't right for the gig….so I skipped out. I haven't been to a movie for like 6 months anyway!

  2. I dont watch any of those award shows. In fact I dont like to watch 'tv'. I dont go to movie theatres at all but catch many movies and serial shows online. I didnt even see the 3 films you had mentioned! The last movie I watched was Wreck It Ralph lol!

  3. I didn't watch for two reasons, one it conflicted with Walking Dead (a favourite show of mine), and two, I haven't seen most of the movies released because it is too expensive to go to the movie when you have three kids in higher education, they sound is far too loud in the theatres, and three, I have no idea who most of the movie stars are since I just don't follow that kind of stuff.

I watched part of it. I find that it is too drawn out. I liked wanting the host through his monologue (I forget his name) and that was actually pretty funny. I wanted Django Unchained to win more, but was happy that they won one award.

  5. I watched a bit of the beginning and managed to catch the end with the big awards. Usually, I will have seen at least a few of the big nominees but this year, I only managed to see a few on the movies in the animated category. Ah, life with four kids!

  6. I haven't seen Django Unchained – heard it was great though.
Interesting to see the reasons why people didn't watch the show last night, and those that did.
Loved reading about it this morning though!

  7. Loved Walking Dead -you didn't need to watch the Oscars – twitter told you everything that happened atleast 7 times

  8. I didn't watch the Oscars. I missed Walking Dead last week so I had to watch that episode before the new one. The Oscars tend to be a bit long for my liking too, yet I can sit through a Walking Dead marathon. 🙂

  9. I only PVR'd it so that I could take part in a forum discussion I was part of..and that was focused on the commercials anyway. I have never actually watched the Oscars and don't plan to start. The parts I did catch looked pretty dry and boring.

  10. I didn't watch them this year as we had other plans. Think they are a little drawn out too.

  11. Funny, I watched the Oscars but don't usually. I really was looking forward to hearing Adele sing the Skyfall song. I tried live tweeting it and some of the other tweets were hilarious! My husband and I were flipping between the Oscars and The Biggest Loser.
