I was thrilled to have the opportunity to guest post over here at Tales Of A Ranting Ginger! I had this awesome idea, and thought it would make a great guest post.
The boys and I did some egg dying for Easter fun, and after we were finished, we had a lot of the dye leftover. Well it seemed like a waste just to toss it. That’s when it hit me! My mom gave me all these pillow cases a couple of years ago that I’ve been trying to use up (well over 100 of them).
I decided to make my own tie dyed style yarn. Here is how I did it.
I took 1 pillow case, and laid it in my sink, and then poured 1 left over dye on top of it:
I did this for each of 5 colours. Most of them were vibrant, but I noticed the pink looks barely there:
Next I put them in the dryer on high heat to seal in the colours, I liked that some of the colours bled over as I :

Next I took each pillow case, and trimmed off the folded end.
Next I just cut all the pillow cases into strips. Don’t do it too skinny, or they will snap easily, when you are securing them together, or knitting with them.
I do about 1-2 inches generally. I am ok with them not being too uniform, as I like the look of varied thicknesses in a knitted project.
Next is making it into yarn. So I take 2 strips, and put them together, by sliding one inside the other and pulling tight:
For the rest of the strips I just loop one on the string like this:
After all strips are attached to each other, you just need to wind up your new yarn:
