Help Give Young Canadians A New Chance On Life

Even in a country as developed as Canada, there are still hundreds of thousands of people without a home to call their own. What’s even more dismaying is that thousands of young Canadians, who are the future of the country, have been forced onto the streets for reasons beyond their control.

During the winter months, this is incredibly difficult on Canadian youth as the powerful gusts of wind and blowing snow makes warm shelter very elusive. The problem is not a regional one either – there are youth all over the country without family or a place to call their own. In Toronto for example, the city estimates at least 10,000 different young men and women are on the streets each year. The city experiences winter storm and extreme cold alerts for months, and relies on social housing and charitable organizations to offer shelter to those in need.

The Covenant House is one of these organizations, and is recognized as one of the most important organizations in the city to help curb the rate of youth homelessness. Volunteers have worked with hundreds of teenagers and young adults to provide shelter, and use the services available at the Covenant House to provide a second chance. Volunteers and social program organizers repeatedly say that most youth living on the streets are where they are because of circumstances beyond their control, and simply need someone to believe in them – to give them a chance to turn their lives around.

The Covenant House relies on donations from individuals and businesses across the GTA to finance 80 percent of its operating budget. The budget is necessary for healthcare, counselling, and education services. But the Covenant House is perhaps most notable for being a shelter and an employment assistance centre, which gives young people jobs training development to move from a life on the streets into a life with a future.

In order to support the Covenant House’s mission, the operators of are donating $50 for every person who registers an account through the website until March 20 – the first day of spring. Young people need someone to believe in them, to tell them they can have a real life – help the Covenant House open more doors for young Canadians.
