Family Fun in Haliburton

Haliburton, ON is a small town 2.5 hours North East of Toronto located in beautiful cottage country.  It is home to a variety or resorts, cottages, long term rentals and day visit opportunities.

We recently took a day trip to enjoy the area and visit a close friend.  We focused our activities on our boys favorite things right now – playgrounds, trains, planes, water (lakes) and food.

Trains

Haliburton was once part of the Victoria Railway that ran for over 89 kms stretching from Lindsay, ON to Haliburton, ON.  This railway line is famous for being built by a group of Icelandic immigrants and was closed in the 1990s.  This railway is now a scenic trail that can be used for hiking, walking, cycling, snowmobiling etc. (http://www.ontariotrails.on.ca/trails-a-z/haliburton-county-rail-trail)

To pay homage to this part of Haliburton’s history there are two rail cars that we visited – a large black engine that the boys could climb into and see the engine room and a red caboose (used as the tourist information).  Of course the large black train was instantly named Hiro by my boys  as they thought it looked like Hiro from Thomas the Train

Planes

Near to the train engine is a large fighter jet preserved and beautifully restored.   The CF-100 was built in the 1950s and served for the RCAF in Canada and Europe.  This plane was restored last August.  (http://haliburtonhighlander.ca/2012/08/30/cf-100-looks-ready-to-soar-again/) My boys loved talking about this plane but desperately wanted to go on in like they did the train!

Food

After a visit to the playground in town we headed to Pinestone Resort (http://www.pinestone-resort.com/) for lunch.  We’ve heard great things about the resort and wanted to take a look while grabbing some great food.  We loved our meal and really appreciated that the kitchen split up two kids meals for our boys so they could each have half a grilled cheese and half an order of pasta – the perfect way to appease my boys who want variety in their meal.  I had the Highlander Pizza (a cheesy Hawaiian pizza) and my husband had their Grilled Striploin Steak on a Baguette which he raved about.

If you are looking for a wonderful day outing , resort stay, golf weekend or family adventure Haliburton is a great choice.  We loved our day and look forward to going out.
