The Wonder of IMAX

Yesterday I took my boys to their first IMAX film. As a kid, I always loved going to IMAX films because they were so big, so much larger than life. The way the screen wraps around, the way you feel inside the film the way your stomach sinks as you are taken over a mountain.

When we visited the Ontario Science Centre and saw that one of their IMAX films was about a train, I knew this was something we had to see! My love trains – love them more than I thought was possible to love something. Rocky Mountain Express was everything I hoped for.

The boys loved the excitement of the steam train and the scenery of the Rocky Mountains. I loved the story of the building the Canadian Pacific Railway and the trials and tribulations of its creation. The scenery was spectacular and the storyline compelling. The avalanches, the failed bridges, the deaths of the immigrant workers are all such a powerful part of our Canadian history. For many Canadians the railway is something that exists, but rarely do we take time to think about how it was built and the sacrifices that were made. The combination of stunning scenery, history and story makes this a wonderful film for everyone even if you aren’t a train nut like my boys.

Not only was the movie a great experience as a family but it was a chance to be transported into another Province, another time and another story.

Have you seen an IMAX film? What did you think?
