Bird Kingdom Niagara Falls Canada

We had been looking forward to a last day trip of the summer last week for some time. We were driving up to Niagara Falls (about 3 hours) and planned on spending the day visiting many attractions. As we got closer and closer the weather got worse and worse.  We stayed positive and hoped it would clear up. 

Luckily for us one of the places we planned on visiting was The Bird Kingdom.

 

The Bird Kingdom is open every day of the year. This beautiful tropical free flying aviary is home to over 400 birds. We spent almost 2 hours casually walking through every room and interacting with the animals. Since it is a tropical environment it is quite humid. You may want to dress in layers so you can remove a jacket or sweater. 

The building that houses this attraction was the original Spirella Corset Factory, built in 1907. It was one of the first poured concrete buildings ever made in Canada. The building then became home to the famed Niagara Falls Museum in 1958, with its world-renowned collection of Egyptian artefacts. Amazingly, it was discovered the museum had been home to the actual mummy of King Ramesses I! Unfortunately for the museum, that fact wasn’t discovered until after the museum closed and the mummy was safely returned back to Egypt.

The parking was separate from other Falls attractions and covered. Perfect for a rainy day like when we went. There is also a few small cafe style restaurants in the building making it perfect when travelling with hungry children like we were. 

When we arrived we were greeted by three tropical birds. One was a blue and gold Macaw like we have at home. My husband and the bird hit it off and a small crowd was watching them interact. Once inside we followed the painted bird foot prints to the various sections. Bird are not the only animals that call the Bird Kingdom home. There are also bats, reptiles and other small animals.

Seeing the expressions on my family’s face as the birds flew around them was amazing. Paths surrounded by tropical plants and streams as well as a water falls created an atmosphere that was easily enjoyed by all of us. This is a great place for any age to spend some time and get up close and personal with nature. 

Our favourite part of the day was the Lorikeet Feeding. For $2 we got a small cup of nectar to feed the birds. The birds that climb all over your head, arms and everywhere else. Seeing my family covered in birds was awesome. DD loved this so much. Her dad got her two cups to feed the birds. She was not happy when she got pooped on but she stayed in the caged area and enjoyed ever minute of it.

What are lorikeets? The Rainbow Lorikeet, (Trichoglossus haematodus) is a medium sized species of Australasian parrot which is native to the eastern seaboard of Australia, eastern Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Lorikeets range in length from 25–30 cm (9.8-11.8 in) with an average wingspan of 17 cm (6.7 in). Their plumage is very bright and colourful, and they love welcoming guests to the Bird Kingdom at daily feedings.
