Polishing Copper & Brass with Ketchup

PenniesCollage

I have no reason to polish pennies. In Canada we no longer even have pennies. I just remembered an old friend showed me how to polish copper and brass using pennies and wanted to show you all. I actually have some earrings and a necklace I wanted to polish and had to test it out.  After a while my copper and brass pieces start to tarnish. Being a redhead I love wearing them but am not a fan of the green/blue colour.

Tarnish is a thin layer of corrosion that forms over copper, brass, silver, aluminum, and other similar metals as their outermost layer undergoes a chemical reaction.

I used the ketchup I had in my fridge, no brand preference. Found an old toothbrush and polished the pennies. Rinsed and dabbed with paper towel. Every one came up shiny and clean. I was so pleased. So I decided to polish my jewllery with ketchup as well. Who knew you could use ketchup to polish copper and brass?

There was no easy way to do it. It was messy and took a few good scrubs. But it worked!

Once that turned out I decided to polish up my necklace

I was very happy with the results and love that I was able to do this with just ketchup. Who knew polishing copper and brass could be so easy?

Do you have any do it yourself tips for polishing jewelry?

This is cool to know! I had no idea! 🙂 Lol, in the pic of you polishing your jewelry, though, it looks like a bit of a blood bath! 😮
