Why My Friends and Family Don’t Know I Blog

Why My Friends Don't Know I Blog

Blogging is my thing. It is the only thing that I can keep a secret from many people that I know. It may sound weird to many, but for me, it is just the way that I like it. Don’t get me wrong, my blog isn’t a dirty secret I get some illicit pleasure out of keeping quiet. Instead, it is my place to write, to create and to showcase the things I love. It provides me with opportunities I would not otherwise have access to and it has allowed me to meet some of the most amazing people. Blogging has taught me a lot about myself and reminded me that I am passionate about writing and sharing and being part of a community. My blog has allowed me to grow as a person and feel more secure in my parenting, my choices and provides validation sometimes when I need it most.

Life is full of harsh critics and sometimes they are our closest friends and family. So, for that reason, and many others I am delighted that many people in my life do not read my blog. For now, I can keep it for my readers, my wonderful blogging friends and me. Blogging is my safe space, my warm comfy blanket, and my liberator.

Do you blog? Do your family and friends know?

Kerrie blogs at Family Food and Travelfollow.  She is a mom of twin boys (born March 2010) who she often refers to as the ‘twinado’.  Kerrie loves, writing, travel, photography, and fabulous food.  Prior to kids, Kerrie was an avid reader and scrapbooker and hopes to one day return to those activities.  Kerrie once considered herself successful, that was until she attempted toilet training twins.

Yes my family and friends know I blog. The reasons they know is to me it is my business. I support their businesses, and expect they will support my business. At first I got a lot of snide comments. I just told them this is my business, and something I enjoy. If they didn't like it, fine, but I don't want to hear it.

  2. My family and friends know. Do they get it, nope. Do I care? Nope! Because it’s my life, my business, my choice. I do what benefits me and my family and I’m not out to please anyone else. If people don’t like my blog or think I’m wasting my time etc that’s exactly that, their thoughts. Don’t let others thoughts and feelings about what makes you happy drag it down.

No, I don't have a blog, but I think your policy is a smart one. Many bloggers have to edit themselves because the know their family, friends and neighbors might be reading.

  4. My family doesn't know, only a few of my friends, and I like it that way. I don't think it's strange; it's not like I'd give my sister my journal and tell her to read it. I'd hate to go to a family argument and have them talk about what they read on my blog, or argue about some of the issues. And I don't like the idea of censoring myself because I'm thinking "if I write this, they'll interpret it this (wrong) way."

Yeah, I blog. I don't hide it from my family and friends, but neither do I ask them if they are reading it or tell them about what I'm blogging – unless I think it would really interest them. I'm always pleasantly surprised to find out someone is reading it, but it also caused a problem once when my brother-in-law and his wife didn't like something I posted. So… 🙂

  6. My friends and family do know and for the most part they've been pretty supportive although I don't write any real personal stories. There have been some "jealous" moments from friends that don't understand what I do and how much work I put into it.

  7. My friends and family know I blog and that it is my means of an income being a stay at home mom. I have found some friends snicker or look confused at how blogging can be an income source, but I figure if they want more information I'll tell them. My husband didn't get the whole blogging thing for the longest time and he's just now coming around since he's seen some money coming in from it. Its hard for a lot of people to grasp.

  8. It is weird isn't it. My friends all know but I'm not sure if my mom has even ever looked at my blog, is that odd? Don't think I have ever told my dad about it. I think is funny when people I know start talking to me about something I posted.
