#GingerPride Redheads Online New Monthly Feature

When I was growing up I was the only real redhead I knew. My grandmas friends all had dyed red hair and they would tell me how lucky I was. As I child I did not understand. Nobody wants to be different or unique growing up. So it was not until I was a teen that I truly appreciated being a redhead.

I have two sibling who do not have red hair. My mom has 4 siblings and none of them have red hair. But I do have a redheaded cousin on my moms side. My dad has 9 sibling and between all of them there was only one red haired cousin. His mother had 11 siblings, again , no red hair. So where did my red hair come from? Well I get asked this all the time. Turns out my paternal grandmothers father had eleven sisters and they all had red hair. It is quite amazing that with all this family only 3 are redheads through these generations. YET I have two redheaded children myself.

They say red heads are a minority and we are going extinct. I find this strange as there seems to be more and more redheads now then there ever was when I was a child. There are many stereotypes that come along with being a redhead as well. Some are true, some not. Some are just laughable when you think about it.  Over the last couple of years I have grown a good sized following and recently I have come to realize, many are redheads like me. So in true Ginger fashion, I am going to feature some of the redheads I know online through blogs and social media. Us redheads always seem to be able to spot one another out in a  crowd.  We have some similarities and we all have stories to tell. So please look for this feature the last Friday of the month.

Today I will start with me. These questions will be the same for every redhead I feature. If you are a redhead and online, please let me know if you would like to be featured through my contact page above.

Describe your red hair colour

I have been referred to as auburn and as orange but I prefer to say dark red.  In the summer I get strawberry blond highlights from the sun.

Tell us a Redheaded stereotype you fit

I have a bad temper and I feel pain. As I get older I can control my temper. However the pain thing sucks. I do not know how many times I have been to the Dr or hospital to have them say “It is because you are a redhead!”

Who is your favourite famous redhead dead or alive?

Right now with winter approaching and talk of the Olympics I am a big fan of Jon Montgomery Fellow Canadian and Olympic Gold Medalist.

Are there any redheads in your family? If so how many and how are they related to you?

Like I mentioned above, I have a couple of cousins and two of my four children are redheads.

Does the word GINGER offend you?

I know some think of it as in insult, but I like it. When I was a child I got called Red or Pippy. I much prefer Ginger and to me it sounds like a term of endearment.

What colour do you love to wear with your hair and which do you not?

I love earth tones, browns, beige and even blue. I never ever ever will wear pink. Not in clothes and not in make up. It is just not me.

Tan, freckle or burn?

I burn then freckle. The closest tan I had was when my freckles melted together .

Anything else you want to share?

I pretty much cover my thoughts about life and being a Ginger here. I have even added a Ginger Love tab at teh top so you can see all my fave Gingers and stories about redheads.

Share with us a pic of your hair. Not creepy (just love all the shades of red)

I get all of this. I am the ONLY redhead in my family and knew very few growing up. I hated my red hair when I was very young but also learned to love it when I got a little older. AND YES – there are more redheads (seemingly) than ever before! BTW I adore pink 😉

I used to loathe the fact I had read hair. I wanted nothing more than to change it when I was younger. Now I love that I am a rare one. I have a light red so it is not fire engine. I had 3 brothers and 2 of them had red hair, my mom had red hair, grandma's on both sides. When It came time for me to have kids all i kept thinking is I am going to have a brood of redheads but wouldn't you know it not one of them has red hair!! The whole pain thing I can relate with that. I had all three of my kids by C-section and let me tell you i thought I was going to die lol.. They gave me an extra dose of pain killer because I was a redhead. I didn't know it at the time but it is common for redheads to have a more intense pain or a lessened pain tolerance. Oh yeah and the clashing of hair color on clothes, i used to care but not anymore.

  3. What a great idea for a weekly feature! My uncle is a redhead, and all his kids and their kids are redheads too. They have all different shades of red from strawberry blonde to brick red. They are also very fair-skinned.

My little niece is a red head and she is a gorgeous little girl. People stop her and her mom to admire her curly red hair. I think you are blessed to have red hair, it is unique. Around every corner you see a brunette or mostly a blonde. Enjoy your ginger status 🙂

We have the same pattern in my family. One every generation, until my aunt married another redhead. I have redhair and I was a bit sad when I married my husband because he is half black, so I was sure we would never have a red head. Guess what? My son is definitely a redhead, although he has a bit of a tan instead of the pale skin.

  9. What is this red head pain thing? I have never heard about it. Are red heads more sensitive to pain? I had no idea!
Thanks for sharing this, this is going to be a wonderful feature!

  11. I love the picture you added. I understand the pain thing especially at the dentist. If he would normally inject 2 needles for freezing, I easily require double or more of that amount!
