What you need to know about business travel

Everyone loves the idea of getting away from the daily routine and going off to visit somewhere interesting, if only for a few days.

Today more of us get the chance to travel through our work than ever before and so knowing about the differences between a holiday and business travel can be really important.

Although going away on a business trip doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy yourself, it does involve a little more of a responsible attitude to things.

Expenses

How to pay for all the different parts of a business trip can become confusing. If everything is included, as might be the case for a corporate jaunt, then it’s quite easy to keep your personal spending separate.

If you are self employed or claiming things back on expenses things can get a lot more complicated. Using small business card is a great way to keep clear distinctions between what is a personal outlay and what constitutes a business expense (and therefore possible to claim back via tax or an employer)

Business class

When you travel ‘down the back’ of an aeroplane you expect limited personal space and a certain economy when it comes to in-flight catering. However, business class flights are only one down from First Class when it comes to the higher level of service you can expect.

Most top flight airlines rely on their business customers for their profit margins and so tickets don’t come cheap. However, a level of privacy, seats that become beds and high class standards of food and drink mean that you can arrive at your destination refreshed and ready for work.

Packing

Anyone who regularly travels for business knows that packing is even more important than for a holiday. Not only do you have to make sure you have your ‘work clothes’ as well as leisure wear, you will probably be taking some materials along for meetings or conferences, even if it is just a laptop or tablet that might usually stay at home for a holiday trip.

If you are taking any essential pieces of equipment for your work it is always best to try and include them in your carry-on luggage so that they stay with you at all times. Even if you are fully insured, the loss of data or other information can mean disaster for the whole trip.

Great tips. I don't travel for business, but my husband does occasionally. He kind of just throws everything into a big pile in his suitcase, though.

You are right, there is a lot to consider when you are taking a business trip. It's important to plan in advance for when you do it.

If I traveled for business, I would shoot for First Class if I could swing it, sounds like business class isn't too far off. I didn't realize that. Great tips here, I could use them in the packing light department! 🙂

Quite a bit to factor in when traveling for business purposes. So far all the trips that I got to take were for pleasure purposes.

I have never traveled for business, always refused because I do not want time away from my family. Everyone I know that does travel for business conferences always comes back and all you hear about are the parties and drinking so I figured I never missed anything by not going.

  23. We always make sure we take medications and electronics with us on the flight. This last flight we took, our luggage was delayed in Chicago and we didn't get it at our destination for a day or so. I am getting somewhat tired of traveling by plane and thinking car and train are more the way to go.

I always try to pack everything in my carry on (which for me, is nothing short of a major miracle), just so I can go from plane to taxi to business meeting easily.
