Toxin Toxout by Bruce Lourie and Rick Smith Book Review with Giveaway

toxin-toxout

This book, Toxin Toxout is written by the two Canadian authors Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie who wrote Slow Death by Rubber Duck: How the Toxic Chemistry of Everyday Life Affects Our Health and has definitely been an eye opener for me. The authors use their own bodies to conduct detox experiments and the results were very alarming. It was very interesting to read about how they were their own guinea pigs and show how easily our bodies soak up the chemicals from the air, food and products.

It contains a lot of useful information on what toxins are found in items and products we encounter in our everyday lives. Since my daughter was born 6 years ago I have been trying to buy organic food when possible and have been using all natural products for her and not long after that I switched to all natural cleaning products for the house. For me the biggest ones I am working on now avoiding are in personal care items for the rest of our household.

Some tips I discovered while reading this book:

Try to eat Organic Fruits and Vegetables when possible. Where it is available try to get organic, local food products.

Drink Tap Water not Bottled Water

I currently do this now and bring my own refillable glass bottle to work and the gym. Drink lots to help your body flush out the toxins.

Read the Labels on Products

Try to avoid products containing parabens, phlates and perfumes. It is getting easier every day to find these items at reasonable prices in groceries and big box stores.

Adopt a Detox lifestyle

I know we have all heard a million times how great exercising is for us but now here is another reason. Sweating is one of the most basic natural detox techniques. Maybe my hot yoga class tonight will sweat out those chemicals that are hiding in my body.

Overall I found this book very informative and it has me thinking of the different products I come into contact without throughout the day. I definitely will be purchasing and reading their first book. The authors are very entertaining and it often felt like they were sitting with me and having a conversation.

Following the runaway success of their first book, 2 of Canada’s leading environmental activists give practical and often surprising advice for removing toxic chemicals from our bodies and homes. There are over 80,000 synthetic chemicals in commerce today, including hormone-disrupting phthalates and parabens, cancer-causing pesticides, heavy metals and air pollutants. Rick Smith and Bruce Lourie use their outrageous experiments (they and their brave volunteers are the guinea pigs) to prove how easily our bodies absorb these chemicals from the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the products we smear on our skin—day after day. Then they give us the good news about what is in our control and the steps we can take for reducing our toxic burden. They investigate the truth behind organic foods, which detox methods actually work, if indoor air quality is improving, and how we dispose of waste (where do those chemicals go?). The result is nothing short of a prescription for a healthier life.
