For a remote, cut off part of Mexico, head to Riviera Nayarit, known for its down to earth luxury in a little known part of the country. Nayarit sits on the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico, with most of the small towns hugging the coastline because down here the forest is still mostly untouched and unspoiled. With so many natural protected areas, and the animals that call this part of the land home, you are more likely to see hordes of sea turtles than crowds of people. If you want to do some good while you are vacationing, what can be more romantic than walking the beaches in the moonlight as you guard sea turtle eggs and hatchlings trying to make it to the ocean.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is known for its powdery sands and slow, laid back vibe where tourists in the know head instead of Cancun. Here in Playa del Carmen you are closest to the sea and can take advantage of the opportunity to find hidden and private beaches. Merida
Merida is the capital city of Yucatan and has long been a cultural hub owing to its position as a stronghold of Spanish colonists. Its one of the largest historic districts in the Western Hemisphere and the architecture is interesting because it is a mix of French, Spanish and then Mayan motifs pulled from the nearby city ruins. If you are an old romantic, the many haciendas that have lined the city for years make the perfect retreat to fully immerse yourself in the culture, beauty and food of this area of Mexico. Morelia
Known as the intellectual capital of Mexico, Morelia is home to colonial theaters, cathedrals, municipal buildings and cloisters that have been converted into a unique shopping district. This well preserved city leaves you feeling like you’ve stepped back in time to a day when romance and chivalry were the norm. Open air music, rooftop dining at some of the best restaurants in the country and romantic suites in some of the most beautiful hotels await.
