Fresh from the Oven French Bread Recipe

Nothing makes a home feel more ‘homey” than fresh bread baking in the oven! even my picky kids love to eat it warm covered in butter straight from the oven. I love to make it on cooler days or even in the evening as the house warms up quick. It is fabulous with pasta dishes and entertaining. This recipe is so good and best of all, you do not even need a bread maker!

Fresh from the Oven French Bread

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 teaspoon active quick rising dry yeast
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 tbs.corn meal
  • 1 tbs of olive oil or cooking oil.
  • 3-4 ice cubes
  • 1 egg white

DIRECTIONS:

-In a large mixing bowl place hot water and yeast until yeast becomes foamy about ten minutes.
Place 1/4 cup of bread flour on your clean counter top and reserve. Place remaining 3 3/4 cups bread flour and salt in your mixer bowl.  With your dough hook mix on low for about 4 minutes until a ball forms. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes. Turn the mixer on for another two minutes on low.
-Remove dough from the bowl on the floured surface knead dough until forms a nice silky smooth ball.
-Place dough back in a large lightly oiled bowl I use pam and cover with Saran wrap for about 1 hour or until doubles in size.
-Remove dough from the bowl and cut in half. On floured surface roll dough out into two long loaves. Roll dough tightly like a jelly roll tucking in edges. Place dough on a lightly oiled pan and place corn meal over the oil. Let rise for about 1 hour or until doubles in size. Preheat oven to 450 degrees
-With a sharp paring knife make 3-4 shallow, diagonal slashes. Coat the top of the breads with egg-white. place 3-4 ice cubes in the bottom of your oven the steam makes a nice crusty bread. If you don’t have ice cubes put 1/2 cup of water in a pan on the lowest level of your oven.
Bake bread in the oven for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.  Slice and Serve!
