Real life ghost stories in Canada

I have written about a few encounters I have had over the years. Times I was certain someone else was in a room with me or something was just not right. Times I have actually seen an image that resembled another person. Scary, creepy and sometimes unexplainable times. One thing I have learned over the years is if there is a spirit somewhere I will sense it.

It has happened too many times for me to not accept.

I am the mom who likes to volunteer to go to my children’s fields trips as a supervisor. Often these trips are to historic locations. Places in Canada that mark significant times in our history. Each time I go knowing very little about the place. Each time I feel, smell or hear something that can not be explained. When I mention it, I am told the place is haunted.

In Alberta this happened to me often.

We toured an old courthouse with my son’s Beaver group. While there we went into the basement to use the restroom. I smelled something odd and felt a cold spot in the air. The tour guide noticed me shiver and told me the basement was haunted.

Another time we went to Heritage Park outside of Calgary. I grew up close by so I was aware of a lot of the history in the area. We toured the grounds and buildings while learning about the time period. It was a fun place to visit. When our tour guide finished up with our walk through I asked her what was upstairs in a specific building. She replied it was locked up and shut off with no access. So we would not be able to see it. She said she has never been upstairs in that building. I looked confused and told her I saw a person watching us from a second story window. Turns out the location is a well known location for hauntings.

In BC we visited one of Canada’s oldest China Towns in Victoria. We went down a very narrow alley and I felt something like a person push by me. I almost fell over it was such a quick rush. The paranormal energy in Fan Tan Alley as you walk past its abandoned opium dens and gambling halls is experienced by many and kinda freaked me out a bit.

This time of year we all hear these stories more and more. Those who believe seem to have a heightened sense to it. Those who do not, get entertained by reading and listening to the stories. Canada has so much history chances are you or someone you know has experienced similar.

Now I have never been a fan of haunted houses at fairs or parks, real or staged. I do not sign up for ghost walks and avoid anything I know of that is paranormal, but somehow it always finds me. So this year I am considering a haunted train ride with my family. I will be sure to let you know if I go through with it.

Do you have a story to share? I would love to hear about it

  1. I am just like you and I avoid anything that is supernatural. Somehow, I have encountered things that can't be explained. Not to mention, working in a place where death is no stranger, well, you just never know! Thanks for sharing my story!

  2. Thanks for adding my post!! 🙂 I seem to be able to sense the presence of spirits also, it is freaky although I am not scared, it still gives me shivers up my spine!

  4. Great collection of true Canadian ghost stories and thank you for including mine. My paternal grandmother saw my grandfather in her bedroom after he passed away. I suggested to her that it was a dream, but she was insistent that it was true. He stood at the foot of her bed and just smiled at her, and she knew he was alright.
