When your lifestyle is on hold because things are out of your control Trust Depend

Shortly after I had my second child I noticed a change in my body. I was finding myself always looking out for the restroom when out and worried about leaking. My bladder had been through many changes and was not bouncing back as quick as it had after my first pregnancy. Like most women I asked my friends what to do and they all said Kegels. These exercises were okay for a while but within a year I was pregnant with my third child.

During that pregnancy every time I laughed, coughed or sneezed I would experience a little leakage. People would tell me it was common, but I could tell it was more frequent than with the first two. Yes I was getting older and yes my bladder was experiencing a third pregnancy just like the rest of my body, but I was worried. At times I was even embarrassed and did not want to leave the house.  I spoke to my doctor and he assured me things would get easier after the baby was born. But they did not. He gave me options for medication and surgery but neither were of interest to me.

See this was not a daily thing for me, it would happen out of nowhere with little warning. Sometimes it would happen if I was tired, under the weather or really, just because. I didn’t want to change my lifestyle because of the leakage.

Even now after having four children I am always prepared. I find I bring a change of clothes or protection along with me when I go out. As a family we often go out together hiking, walking, exploring the world around us. I will not let something like bladder leakage stop me from enjoying life and enjoying time with my children. I owe it to myself and them to keep going and get out and have fun. So many people experience this and yet we do not talk about it.

Today living a busy life with a business and a family I am worried about leaks. If I feel under the weather, move the wrong way or sit for long periods I am certain I will regret it. I do not want to have to worry about what I am doing or what I am wearing ‘just in case’. I want to live my life and enjoy myself without limitations or concerns.

What is incontinence?

Bladder leakage, also known as urinary incontinence, is a problem of the urinary system. Normally, the bladder stores urine, which is continually produced by the kidneys, until it sends the brain a signal that it needs to be emptied. When any part of the urinary system malfunctions, or if there’s an interruption of the signals between the bladder and the brain, urine leakage can result.

What causes it?

Bladder leakage is a symptom, not a disease, and may be caused by a number of factors.

  • Physical conditions such as pregnancy, childbirth or menopause can contribute to urinary leakage in women
  • Excess body weight has also been shown to be a risk factor since the extra weight puts pressure on the bladder and surrounding muscles
  • As men and women age, so do the bladder muscles causing them to lose their strength and weakening their ability to control urination
  • Certain medications prescribed for conditions unrelated to urinary system may also cause unwanted changes in bladder control
  • Certain foods and drinks, such as including caffeine, alcohol, acidic foods (like tomatoes and citrus fruits) and drinks, chocolate, artificial sweeteners, hot spices and carbonated drinks, can contribute to frequent urination

  19. This issue is rampant among many moms I know, even in their 20s and 30s, yet rarely discussed. I’m so glad Depend came up with something that feels as everyday as regular undies and isn’t such an eye sore. It’s important for ladies to feel feminine and comfortable.
