#SimpleSavings with RetailMeNot.ca Win a $200 gift card Canada

I would not consider myself extreme when it comes to saving money. I would however consider myself to be savvy and somewhat frugal. I know what our needs are, our wants and our splurges. I save where I can, when I can, so I can splurge sometimes. Saving money has become a habit for me over the years. Being a stay at home mom to four, I had to get creative about saving money. When I shop, I automatically go to the clearance section of the store. I watch for coupons to use on purchases and I combine the two when possible. Using a coupon on an item you are already saving on, is a double score!

Needs are items we all need for day to day basics

Wants are those items but brand name or trending. Sometimes wants are items that add pleasure to our day but really, we could live without them.

I save on both my families needs and wants.

Then I can splurge on fun things that we really do not need. I can spend a little more for a night out just because or buy myself an extra bag or purse because I saved so much on the other stuff 🙂

save-money

I am always surprised to see so many people not using coupons. I often wonder why they do not. My sister is one of those people. I think she is nervous and really unsure how to use them. For her and anyone else not sure about coupons, this is for you.

Couponing 101: Spending More to Save More

Couponing Myths and creative ways to leverage coupons and promo codes

Myth 1: Couponing takes too much time

Couponing is not what it used to be. You don’t need piles of flyers, a colour-coded binder and five hours on a Sunday to save big money. Today, all you need is your smart phone and 15 seconds, and you can save instantly almost every time you make a purchase both online and in-store. In the time it takes to check in on your Instagram feed, you can save yourself some extra cash!

Myth 2: You can’t get a coupon on a premium item

Coupons and promo codes can be used for much more than toilet paper and toothpaste. Consumers are becoming savvy to promo codes and high-end retailers are listening, with brands like Club Monaco and Sephora offering discounts in this fashion. Using RetailMeNot.ca, we recently found a promo code for $10 off the entire order and free shipping for high-quality organic and natural items at Well.ca, which carries brands like Honest Company and Method. And if you’re looking for a unique homemade gift, don’t forget to search for a promo code before you buy from Etsy.

Myth 3: Doubling up on savings is against Canadian laws and regulations

Many people often think the sale price is the best price. False – certain retailers will allow you to stack your savings in Canada by adding promo codes or coupons on top of sale prices. Banana Republic is a great example – with frequent sales like 40 per cent off, you can save even more by stacking your savings with a promo code, giving you an extra 40 per cent off sale styles. Talk about a win, win! We recently found a promo code on RetailMeNot.ca for an extra 25 per cent off of sale items at Kate Spade as well.

Myth 4: Couponing isn’t worth the time invested

If you knew that a 15 second search for a coupon code each time you were able to make a purchase could add up to more than $1,500 at the end of the year, would you do it? Of course you would! In fact, RetailMeNot users report an average savings of $20 per transaction, which easily adds to big savings if you shop twice a week or more (who doesn’t)?  Look for deals on everything from free shipping to deep discounts.  The more purchases you make, the more you save!

Myth 5: Online shopping costs more in Canada than the in the U.S.

We’ve all been there – an item on a U.S. retail site seems costs less than on a Canadian site. Blame Canada? Not so fast! Once you factor in the exchange rate, duty, taxes and shipping, those supposed “savings” disappear quickly – meaning there has never been a better time to shop on Canadian-based sites. There are a ton of great Canadian retailers that ship from our home and native land, including Joe Fresh and Sears. Keep your eyes peeled for free shipping and sales, and you’ll be singing “Oh Canada” in no time!

With the cooler weather being here, it was time to buy some winter gear for the family. I do a lot of shopping online because I live in the country, no where near a mall. Plus I love when a company accepts paypal. I have also discovered shopping online has more options for sizing and colour than I would find in store. Only issue I have is shipping costs. So I look for free shipping, or I head to RetailMeNot.ca and search for discount codes that allow for free shipping.

Recently I headed to RetailMeNot.ca and picked up a bunch of great items for the family for winter. I searched by brand to see what coupon codes were available.

retailmenot-search

Once you find the retailer you are after, you will see a list of discount offers. You will  be prompted to get the code or you will see ‘no code’ is needed.  It is nice to see what is already on sale. The retail sites page will then open in the new window. Be sure to add the discount code in at check out to redeem and save.

I found a code to save 40% at the Gap! That is huge savings! I saved $69.18 using the code. Plus scored free shipping choosing the slower option.

gap-save

The savings only began there! I found something for everyone and saved on all my items. I also did not pay shipping at all.

Saving this money took no time at all! A few minutes to search and add in. With the extra money I can buy something else or just get ahead. Every purchase I make, I use a code to save the most possible. You should too! See www.retailmenot.ca and start saving today!
