Family Fun In Nassau, Bahamas

Traveling to the Bahamas as a family can be overwhelming if you don’t do a little research beforehand.  You will want to make sure that you are staying in a family friendly hotel and that you are planning family friendly activities.  If not, it can cause a few ruffled feathers with your group.  It’s not going to be a lot of fun for the kids if that tour of the city ends up being for ages 18 and up and you didn’t know about it!

One of the best family friendly hotels on the island of Nassau is Atlantis.  This isn’t to say the other hotels are bad, but this one seems to be the best fit for families.  They offer all inclusive packages which includes the hotel, dining and select activities.  The dining option includes certain restaurants with a special menu, but the choices are plentiful.  The activities that are included are the marine exhibits, the Aquaventure water park, fitness center, movies in the theater, the library, daily fish feeding and the pool.

The Aquaventure water park is every person’s dream location for a vacation!  You get to choose from water slides, river rides, zip lines, children’s play area, cownose ray feedings, shark safari and the beach.  You can also indulge in shopping and eat at numerous restaurants right there.  No travel is necessary!  Atlantis also offers sea lion discovery programs and multiple dolphin adventures.

If you ever tire of the water, take a day to visit the Ardasta Gardens & Zoo, right in the heart of Nassau.  This is the only zoo in the Bahamas and has over four acres of tropical gardens with jaguars, lemurs, snakes, iguanas and much more.  They have a petting zoo too.  You will even get to see the national bird of the Bahamas, which is the Caribbean Flamingo.  Three times a day these flamingos will march in line and follow commands up on stage, delighting everyone in the audience!

When you are in town, you might want to stop in at the Pirates of Nassua Museum.  Here you will learn the history of the pirates and how they used Nassau as their home base.  You will board a replica of a pirate ship and enter a world of interactive pirate adventures.

Don’t be afraid to wander through the town of Nassau, near where the cruise ships dock.  There are some interesting stores and an outdoor marketplace.  At the marketplace, plan on saying a lot of no thank you’s or if you do see something that you want to buy, plan on haggling on the price.  It is expected in this area.  The good news is that you will find lots of places to eat in town.  If you have an adventurous family, then you can try out some of the places where the locals eat.  If not, a couple of your other options are McDonald’s or Dunkin Donuts.

The most important thing when traveling to the Bahamas as a family is to have a good time and learn about other cultures.  You will also want to learn about how people live in different countries.  It will definitely look different than where you live.  Travel is all about learning and discovering new places, so go out and explore.  You’ll be amazed at what you can find!
