Top Tips For Staying Safe When Traveling With Kids

When we travel, we travel as a family. We look for family friendly resorts and destinations, restaurants and take lots of road trips. Spending time together as a family is a lot of fun, but it can be stressful too. Taking the kids traveling puts a whole new spin on keeping them safe. From new diseases popping up to large tourist crowds, here is how you can keep the little ones out of danger while exploring the world.

Buy Travel Insurance

Get online, do your research and get you and your children some travel insurance. Most of these will cover hospital visits, accidents while traveling and even lost luggage too. If you have CAA or a current insurance plan, make sure to ask about adding this option on. I have been able to buy it at my bank on many occasions by the day. Medical bills can add up fast and nobody every wants to think about the bad but it is important to plan ahead.

Keep Hydrated

Traveling can be hard work and since you’re having fun, you probably aren’t noticing how exhausted it can make you feel. Dehydration can be devastating so make sure to keep a reusable bottle of water with you at all times and drink up! An empty bottle can be taken through airport security as well and filled up on the other side. Airplanes get dry and the heat at tropical destinations will dehydrate you.

Choose Food Carefully

Instead of choosing cheap options like fast food in big cities, go to the grocery store and buy some healthy meals to cook back at your hostel or hotel. If you aren’t staying somewhere with a kitchen, choose at least one healthy meal while eating out per day and grab some fresh fruit, nuts and veggies for on-the-go snacks. Also, if traveling to a country with questionable street food, make sure to avoid anything that isn’t on ice or open to the elements. A good plan is to take over the counter meds with you to help with upset stomach just in case. Be sure to ask your Dr about any shots you may need for that area as well.

Always Wear Life Jackets

If your travels bring you to water activities like swimming, kayaking, yachting and sailing, make sure to wear safety vests. The kids may not think they’re comfy but they can be life saving if an accident were to occur.

Always Pay Attention

A large tourist crowd can engulf a small child in a second so it’s your job to keep a close eye. Make sure to always keep the kids close, don’t let them go off anywhere without you as a giant crowd of people can be disorienting for them. Leaving a note i n their pocket with your name and cell phone is a good idea too. If staff sees a child wondering they can announce your name over the speaker. Personally I hold my children’s hands but wiggly children can get away.

Traveling with your family has many obstacles but as long as you pay attention, communicate with each-other and have a plan of action in case of emergencies, you will be fine.  Happy travels!
