5 Must See Places to Visit in the Fall

Fall is the season where the weather becomes cooler and the leaves change colors in certain parts of the United States.  There are so many places that families can visit in order to experience this amazing season.

Here are 5 of the best places for families to visit during the fall season:

  1. The Catskills in New York State

The Catskills are located in southeastern New York State and while it is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year, the fall season is the best.  During this time, the leaves are changing colors and the views from the thirty five mountains that are in the Catskills are spectacular.  Everyone is able to enjoy the bounty of the fall harvest, whether they visit a farmer’s market or an orchard where they can pick their own apples and pumpkins.  Many of the historic villages in the area host festivals and craft fairs during these months and these are things that everyone in the family will enjoy going to.

  1. The Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a favorite amongst tourists all year long, because of the varieties of trees that can be found inside the park.  The entire family will love hiking any of the 800 miles of trails while looking at the leaves that have changed to the colors of gold, orange, red and purple.  Anyone who is interested in visiting this area for the fall will want to remember that fall gets a later start in the southern states.  The leaves will begin to change in early October and continue until early November.

  1. The Katy Trail in Missouri

The Katy Trail is 225 miles long and is the perfect destination for families who love to hike and bike.  The entire family will get to spend time outdoors and the parents will love the opportunity to travel through wine country at the same time.  The trail is surrounded by dense forests and bluffs created from limestone, so the scenery is magnificent.  At night, the family can relax in front of a fire at a local bed and breakfast, while the parents enjoy a glass of local wine.

  1. Leavenworth, Washington

Leavenworth, Washington is best known for the Oktoberfest that is held there every October.  Leavenworth is a traditional Bavarian village that is located at the bottom of the Cascade Mountains.  The festival offers plenty of authentic Oktoberfest foods as well as beer.  The entire family will want to partake in many of the activities that are available during this time while they are learning about the history and traditions of the town.

  1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Mackinac Island is located in Lake Huron off of the coast of Michigan and the only way to reach the island is by boat.  The island itself is a National Historic Landmark and most people who visit are amazed by the fact that no cars are allowed on the island.  Everyone who lives or visits the island must walk, bicycle or ride a horse to wherever they want to go.  While people are exploring the island looking at the fall foliage, they will want to stop and purchase some of the islands infamous fudge.  Most of the confectioners on the island have been making fudge for more than a century, so it has to be delicious.

These five places are only the beginning of where families can travel for the fall season.  There are so many more and each one is unique in its own way.  The one thing to remember is that wherever you go, you will want to find a place with activities that your whole family will enjoy.
