Thanksgiving dinner for the Family

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Loblaws and Zehrs. All opinions are 100% mine.

I have lost count on how many turkeys I have made over the years. I have cooked them whole, halved, just the breast, stuffed, you name it. I can pretty much do it in my sleep these days. I really do not understand what the big deal is. When I was a kid my mom always made it to be such a big deal. So much preparation and so much exhaustion. She would wake up before everyone to put it on and have everything done by a set time. Me, I wake up as normal and get things started. Dinner may be a bit later but it is stress free.

We will be enjoying a turkey with mashed potatoes, gravy, carrots, corn and rolls. I have not decided on a dessert yet but there will be one. Cooking the turkey is easy if you make sure it is fresh or completely thawed ahead of time.

How to cook a turkey

Prepare your turkey by removing giblets, neck and rinsing with water.

Season and place in roasting pan

Place turkey, breast side up, in roasting pan. Brush with melted butter . Tent loosely with foil. Roast in 325ºF (160ºC) oven for about 20 minutes per pound (500 g) or until juices run clear when turkey is pierced and when thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh registers 180ºF (82ºC) for a stuffed turkey or 170ºF (77ºC) for an unstuffed turkey. Remove tent for last hour of roasting.

When down allow it to sit for 20 minutes before carving

Carve and serve

I personally never stuff my turkey as my family prefers it this way.

You can check your turkey while it cooks and brush the drippings over it to brown the outside.

It is really this easy! Once you are comfortable with this you can get creative with your seasonings and stuffings.

For me, the big deal is the carving. I always feel like I’m slaughtering the poor bird all over again. By the time I’m done, it looks like a bomb exploded from the inside. There have been many a Thanksgiving where I am brining the turkey with my tears and muttering over and over again “You’re in a place where you can’t feel pain. You’re in a place where you can’t feel pain…”
