How to Keep Kids Safe Online #KidsWifi (Giveaway)

As you can probably guess, one of the biggest concerns most parents face these days is how to keep their kids safe online. Obviously, you can’t monitor every minute of your child’s computer time. It’s virtually impossible. Children are online at home, on their phones, at school, at work and at their friends homes. Giving clear guidelines and setting rules are important.  Nobody wants to be watching over their child’s shoulder 24/7. However, the following tips go a long way in helping to ensure kids stay as safe as possible, while perusing the Internet.

How to Keep Kids Safe Online

Password Protection

Instill in your children how important it is to never share their passwords with anyone. This includes their best friends and in some instances even certain relatives. You never know when someone might get angry or jealous and attempt to cause harm in whatever way they can think of.

Location, Location, Location

If possible, it’s wise to keep your family computer in a location where you can easily monitor what your children are up to. It’s no secret that the majority of kids want to surf the Internet in the privacy of their own room. But, it isn’t always a good idea. This is especially true when a child is overly trusting or a bit naive, as many children have a tendency to be.

Log Out Every Time

Teach your kids to log out after every computer session, even if they’re going to get back online fairly quickly. This prevents anyone else from using their e-mail or social media accounts to wreak havoc or simply in a joking manner.

Take Full Advantage of Parental Settings

You’d probably be surprised by the number of parents who don’t realize they have more control over their kid’s online activities than they think. Many Internet service providers include safety features as part of their monthly rate. This includes options to limit features such as instant messaging, chat and e-mail, dependent on the child’s age, time constraints, etc.

Go one step further by taking advantage of the parental control options attached to whatever browser you’re using as well. Keep in mind, however, that this won’t completely guarantee that your children will be safe online, 100% of the time. But, it does make a huge difference.

Privacy Matters

Many children, especially the younger ones, don’t fully realize the consequences of sharing personal information with others. Teach your kids not to share ANY personal information without your permission, not to open e-mail from people they don’t know, not to meet up with anyone  they meet online and not to respond to disturbing messages.

These are just a few things you can do, in effort to keep your kids safe online. One of the best things about all of these options is the fact that they’re easy to put into place and often become part of your routine. Obviously you will need to adjust according to your child’s age. Remember, as the old adage goes… “It’s always better to be safe than sorry!

There is another option as well

In two minutes, you can transform the Internet you give your kids. One KidsWifi filters, monitors and controls all your kids online devices, from tablets to computers to game consoles — even devices brought by visiting friends!

When you plug in your KidsWifi, it uses your home Internet connection to create a new Wi-Fi network that is controlled, filtered and monitored the way you want it. Then any wireless device, from computers to tablets to game consoles, can be protected by simply connecting them to your KidsWifi network. Even your kids’ friends can be easily protected!

For $99 you can buy a KidsWifi unit and easily install it in your home. This Canadian company is dedicated to keeping your children safe.

Pick a spot where the kids are online most often in your home. Plug in the unit and follow set up instructions. Create an account then connect your children’s devices. Monitor via your parents’ dashboard. There you can adjust filters, view activity and set limits.

Everything about your kids’ online access can be monitored and controlled from your phone or any Internet-connected web browser. This means you do not need to be at home to see what is going on.

We all trust our children, but curiosity does take over and many children are looking at things online they should not be. Best of all you can cut off access to the internet at any time (bed time etc)

The nice thing about KidsWifi is that we can continue to monitor our children even if we are not home or in the same room. Settings can be adjusted to fit your families needs and usage.
