How to Go Green when You Travel

Many of us have picked up Green habits at home and use them in our day-to-day life. But when we travel, it is not always so easy. It is up to us to do our part to make the world a better place. Choosing to live an eco-friendlier life is good for the environment, and can even be healthier for you when you go green. Choosing to reduce your carbon footprint is something that will take planning in the beginning but will likely become like second-nature to you over time. While the exact guidelines can vary from person to person, and depending on your travel destination, there are some general rules to keep in mind.

Here’s how to easily go green when you travel:

  1. Choose a green hotel.
  2. Pack lightly, I prefer one bag.
  3. Rent a hybrid car if you need a car.
  4. Avoid using plastic bottles. Take a refillable bottle whenever you can
  5. Eat local when traveling. Walk to the restaurant and choose a location that serves local foods
  6. Choose a green tour company or small local tour guide.
  7. Use public transport or bike/walk when possible. This is also a great way to submerge into the culture
  8. Take shorter showers/ use less water.
  9. Skip having hotel towels and linens changed every day. Many have ‘green’ options listed in the room for you
  10. When flying, choose nonstop flights if possible.
  11. Recycle everything you can. Many parks have a carry-in carry-out policy.

Do you like to travel green? What tips do you have to share for easy and affordable eco-friendly travel?

  1. We do our best to travel green. Our recent trip to Mexico we used public transit to get around, used eco friendly bug spray and sun screens, and only had our rooms cleaned every other or 3rd day. Our resort has great info right in the room about being more environmentally friendly while there. I love that we can help.

  2. These are great tips. I’m happy to say my family does so many of these when traveling. We never leave without our water bottles and rarely exchange our bath towels while at hotels.

  3. Thanks so much for sharing these tips! I do my best to live a green life, but that becomes more difficult when I travel. This is a great post.

  4. These are some great tips. I am trying to live a green life. I had not yet put together how to completely do it while traveling.

  5. I love those tips. I tend to be frugal and the green life style overlaps with that frequently. I never use bottled water it is such a big thing for so many people.

  6. I love all of your suggestions – especially the one about bringing refillable bottles! I already do lots of these without realizing I’m being “green” so I guess that’s already a great start!

  7. These are some really great tips. Living a green life is so awesome and being able to incorporate that into every aspect of your life is great. Love this post.

  8. I try to be as green as we can when we travel. I think it is important to support the businesses that are environmentally friendly.

  9. These are some wonderful tips. I think it’s great to try to always be green. I always fill up my own bottle for water now. I use to buy the bottled water but not anymore.

  10. I think I do okay with most of these things. My biggest area of difficulty is packing lightly. I travel so infrequently, I tend to overpack. However, I am even getting better with that. This last trip we went on I wore everything I brought, so no extras! We always have our water bottles with us, even when we are running errands. ?

  11. Truly great list . Thanks for sharing. I am inspired.

  12. I travel quite a bit, and never really ‘think’ about being green, but from your list we are! There are of course more things that I could be doing, but I’m glad to know that I’m inadvertently being green, and now will make a more conscious choice each time I leave my home!

  13. I love these different suggestions. I’m always trying to find different ways to be more greener at home, but never thought to extend it to when we travel.

  14. Great tips on making it happen! Liking how it’s all very possible.
