Stand up for Maternal Health #Heart4MaternalHealth

We here in Canada are very fortunate to have the healthcare we have. We have access to hospitals, Drs, medicine and care that some countries do not. When you are pregnant the facilities we have here in Canada are beneficial for your health as well as your child’s. Over the years I have given birth to four babies and was cared for every step of the way. Finding the right Doctor for me was just an easy phone call away. Check ups, testing, ultrasounds and anything I needed while pregnant was easily accessible. Then once the babies were born, they had the best care and I was pretty much worry free.

If only women everywhere had this kind of care for their babies and themselves during and after pregnancy. Sad fact-Each day, more than 800 women world-wide die from pregnancy or childbirth related complications. These deaths and consequences of severe malnutrition are preventable with proper help and care.

This Mother’s Day, ADRA Canada is calling on Canadians to show their heart for maternal health by helping to raise much-needed awareness to the issue through social media. ADRA works with people in poverty and distress to create just and positive change through empowering partnerships and responsible action.

How can you show your support?

The Show your Heart for Maternal Health campaign encourages Canadians to raise awareness for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) by sharing a photo or video with their hands placed over their belly buttons in the shape of a heart, using the hashtag #Heart4MaternalHealth.

In Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines and Rwanda, the most significant causes of maternal and child mortality are high rates of acute and chronic malnutrition of mothers and children under five and insufficient quality and access to healthcare. Most maternal and child deaths are preventable and by helping to improve MNCH, we can help save lives. Please do your part and join me this Mother’s Day by showing your heart for maternal health everywhere.

Check out the #Heart4MaternalHealth hashtag on social media and see how others are sharing their heart.

  1. We have no idea just how lucky we are in Canada. I hope more people get involved and learn about what’s happening around the rest of the world!

  2. We are indeed extremely fortunate to have our health care system. We never have to worry about the cost of surgeries, childbirth or any test or treatment. I hope people realize how fortunate we are.

  3. It is hard to believe woman are still dying because of pregnancy complications. We are lucky to have access to proper healthcare.

  4. Checking out ADRA Canada because I don’t think I have ever heard of that organization before. This is an important message globally. Many women still die in childbirth and many have substandard care or no care. Also as a result many infants are born with diseases and lifelong health care issues. These two health care issues are inextricably linked and have to be dealt with together. As you know I write about maternal health care often. There is so much more we can be doing globally to support moms and families.

  5. Those statistics are so heartbreaking to read. 800+ women dying from childbrith complications is alarming. We are very fortunate indeed here in Canada.

  6. It breaks my heart to read that malnutrition causes so many deaths. We are so lucky to live in Canada. I will do my part on Mother’s Day for sure.

  7. Maternal health is so important – and like you said so easy to access here in Canada. However, most countries aren’t nearly as lucky. Love the idea of participating in a campaign that focuses on the needs of pregnant women.

It is sad to think of how many women are unable to be as healthy as they should be while pregnant (or any time).

  9. A good friend of mine is currently working overseas with a NPO to figure out this exact issue. What she reported back from the field is so heart breaking. We are really fortunate to have access to such great care and facilities here in Canada. This is an amazing and very important initiative. Thanks for spreading awareness.

  10. It is hard to know that so many people to do not have access to proper health care. Makes me even more grateful for the healthcare that we in Canada, It is not perfect, but there are so many more who do with less.

  11. I really wish the States would get on board with something that actually makes sense…

  12. I think Canada is ahead of the US in some ways when it comes to healthcare. It is such a great cause to support maternal issues in those countries that need help.

  13. This is such a great cause! Healthcare is important everywhere and I think that we need to find better ways to get women, men and children in to the doctors to get what they need done.

  14. This is a great way to raise awareness for such a great cause! I know that we in the United States are not as lucky as Canada with our healthcare, but we still have way better care than many parts of the world. Healthcare should be a necessity and not an optional thing in life worldwide, not just in rich countries.

I am so thankful to have the health care we have in Canada. I have friends that live in other country’s and can barely afford to go to the Doctor when they get sick. I will have to check out the Check out the #Heart4MaternalHealth hashtag.

  16. I have heard about Canada’s healthcare system for years and believe there are some components that would work well here in the US. I hate to think of any mother not having healthcare she needs.

  17. You are very lucky to have such great healthcare! We are blessed with a good plan as well that offers access to doctors but I know so many people who do not.

  18. Wow those are high statistics! So sad! I think I took it for granted all the times I was pregnant. So glad to have insurance and good doctors.

  19. Healthcare is so important. I’ve honestly never really heard about Canada’s healthcare til I read your post. I’m lucky to have great insurance.

  20. It is sad to think there are women who do not have access to good maternal healthcare. We were always blessed to have it for our use here in our area of the US.

  21. Maternal health is so important not just during pregnancy, but also beyond. It can cause real problems for the kids if their mom was malnourished.

As I sit here in a recliner chair at the hospital, next to my daughter who is getting some overnight testing, reading this….I think a lot about Canada. I spent a lot of time in Canada growing up. I remember some older loved ones who had dual citizenship and anytime there was a health issue, they went back to Canada. I’m so happy to see the efforts being made here to raise awareness. I also had micro-preemie triplets. Maternal care is so important!

  23. It’s so heartbreaking to know how difficult it is to maintain good maternal health on a global scale, without the kind of access we have in Canada. We are so blessed. What a beautiful thing to do to bring our community together.
