6 Things to do While Visiting Sun Peaks Resort in The Summer #SunPeaks360

Early this summer we had the opportunity to visit and explore Sun Peaks Resort just 45 minutes outside of Kamloops. The mountain resort is great for families all year-long. Spend the day or a week, however long you stay, there are lots to do. I found the weekdays to be a bit slower paced, not crazy busy and quite enjoyed it. However not all of the shops are open during the week. So you may want to call ahead, if looking for something specific.

With so many attractions, great weather and lots of outdoor fun, there is no shortage of things to do. My kids did not want to leave as they enjoyed every minute of our stay. You can read about our hotel and yummy welcome dinner here

Below is a list of things you and your family can do when visiting Sun Peaks Resort in the Summer

1. Take a Hike

Make the most of your time on Sun Peaks’ beautiful BC hiking trails with a knowledgeable local guide. Experience the very best our alpine playground has to offer, from panoramic views and vivid wildflowers to artifacts of days past and the rich history behind them!

We enjoyed going up the mountain on the chairlift then hiking one of the many trails with our guide. We saw ground squirrels and some deer along our walk. The view was amazing once we reached as high as we were going to go. We saw many happy hikers along the way as well. I had hoped to see some black bear, but they must have been avoiding all of the people out walking.

The wild flowers were out in full bloom and quite beautiful. The kids loved seeing there was still snow in some of the shadowed parts of the mountain as well. There are trails for every ability and I highly recommend signing up for a guide. Their knowledge makes the hike quite enjoyable. Ours definitely did not  mind all of our questions either.

Guided hikes can be booked at Elevation Bike, Ski & Board located in the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel for $25/person including lift ticket.

2. Ride a Bike

Discover Sun Peaks’ favourite experience for downhill and cross country mountain bike rentals from Rocky Mountain & Norco as well as demo bikes from Rocky Mountain, Norco, and Devinci. We also carry components, gear and accessories from Dakine, Fox, Sombrio, Troy Lee Designs, Oakley, Smith, Chromag, Race Face, Maloja, Maxxis, GoPro Cameras and so much more!

My teens got to enjoy a few hours downhill mountain biking. That had been a few times before and really enjoyed it. They started off on beginner trails and in no time, found themselves on the more advanced trails. I will be sharing more about that in a future post.

Bike rentals can be Elevation, Bike, Ski & Board as well.

3. Golf

Sun Peaks Resort offers a one-of-a-kind BC golf vacation opportunity with the greens located at 1,200 metres above sea level, making the Golf Course at Sun Peaks Resort British Columbia’s highest elevation course.

Located next to the chair lift is a driving range for those who would like to practice their golf swing. There is also a beautiful 18 hole course located just pass the covered bridge. I hear it is a great setting for weddings as well.

4.Shop

Stroll through the village along the covered walkways exploring the many shops, restaurants and local services. You can find real-estate listings, eat mini donuts and shop for yummy chocolates, shoes or even onesie PJs with the cute little butt flap. Stores have limited hours during the week, so call ahead if there is something specific you are looking for.

Sundays throughout the summer they also have a fabulous farmers market. You can taste local meats, vegetables, fruits and more.

5. Mountain Cross Cart

A definite must-do activity when visiting Sun Peaks—and maybe the most exciting and exhilarating way to descend a mountain! Sun Peaks Resort is home to North America’s first (and only!) Mountain Cross Cart (MCC) course. Now into the third year of operation, the MCC course has become a main attraction at the village base. With a 512-metre-long course that includes a 52-metre vertical descent, the carts are capable of reaching speeds up to 35km/hr.To add an element of competition, runs are timed allowing participants to race the clock or rival friends for the fastest descent.

Another fun activity my teens got to enjoy was the Mountain Cross Cart course. Guests must be 14 years of age or older to ride these gravity fed, high-speed carts. They are as much fun to watch as they are to ride. Ground squirrels run across the track as you race down the hill. Your time is recorded and you can have a little competition with your family and friends to see who is the fasted.

To get to the top of the course, an attendant hooks your cart onto the pulley system and pulls you up until you reach the top. These carts reminded me of the Flintstones but the speed they picked up coming down surely surprised me. My boys loved these and laugh thinking back to the one getting stuck on the tires along the edge. An attendant had to race up to give him a push.

More information on MCC can be found here

6. Bungee Trampoline

The bungee trampoline is suitable for people of all ages between 20lbs and 220lbs. See for yourself what the bungee trampoline is all about. The bungee trampoline is located slopeside by the Village Day Lodge. Tickets can be purchased at Guest Services, located in the Village Day Lodge.

My eight year old had the opportunity to jump around on the Bungee Trampoline. She has been asking to do this for quite some time as we see this at many places we visit. This was her first time and in no time, she was bouncing and jumping higher than she ever could on her backyard trampoline. She had a blast!

Visit Guest Services, the Activities Sales Desk or Elevation Bike, Ski & Board for your tickets.

These are just some of the fun things you and your family can do while visiting Sun Peaks Resort. With a little planning you will have the vacation of a lifetime visiting this mountain community.

I can not wait to head back and check out the things we missed.
