Homemade Apple Pie Filling Recipe

We have been to the apple orchard a few times this year already. I love strolling through the rows of apple trees and tasting all the goods. It is a comforting place and fills me me joy. My kids love to go and hang out, pick apples and sip cider while petting the animals in the barn. There is something comforting about the apple orchard and all the yummy seasonal smells. I think it brings me back to my grandma’s house with her making pies in the kitchen all from scratch. Boy do I miss those days and her pie!

Only problem is what to do with all the apples we bring home? They only last so long and I am finding I am getting tired of certain recipes. Making apple pie filling is a great way to use up your apples and you can can it for later on. In case you are crazy and sick of pie right now or something! It is also yummy poured over top of ice cream and even better on its own.

Take a look and let me know what you think!

Homemade Apple Pie Filling

Yields: 3 cups

Prep and Time: 5 minutes | Cook Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups apples, sliced and peeled
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup warm wate

Directions:

  1. In a bowl, add ¾ cup warm water, lemon juice and sliced apples. Toss the apples in the mixture to prevent browning.
  2. In a saucepan, combine cornstarch and ¼ cup of water and whisk until blended.
  3. Add sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg to the saucepan, and whisk to combine.
  4. Pour contents from bowl filled with apples into the saucepan and stir. Cook on low heat for 10 minutes or until apples have softened.
  5. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool and thicken before using.

Notes: This recipe works well for apple crisp, apple pie cookies, mini apple pies, and simply enjoyed warm over ice cream. To prepare a traditional pie, this recipe would need to be doubled.

I am going to make up a few of these and gift them to my neighbours. Wrapped with a pretty ribbon they would look so cute and hopefully give them all a little comfort.

Are you an apple pie fan? What would you serve this yummy recipe with?
