Instant Pot Brown Sugar Grits Recipe

There is something about this time of year that makes me crave comfort foods. Foods that fill me up and warm me up at the same time. I love using my Instant pot whenever possible. It makes meal time easy time in our busy home. I just start everything in the morning and go on with my day. No stress and no need to watch over the stove. Lately the weather has been a bit chilly here and I am looking for recipes to warm me up while feeding my hungry crew a healthy meal. This Instant Pot Brown Sugar Grits recipe is sure to hit the spot!

This recipe can be prepared before bed and ready for breakfast. Perfect for me as we often eat as we walk out the door and never have time for morning meal prep.

Brown sugar grits

Instant Pot Brown Sugar Grits

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups instant-cook grits
  • 2 cups water (or more depending on preferred consistency)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon, optional
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla, optional
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup, for serving

Directions:

Place the butter in the Instant Pot and select the saute setting.

Once the butter is melted, add the grits and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.

Add the water and salt, and cover and seal the Instant Pot.

Select manual and cook for 2 minutes. Quick release.

Combine the brown sugar and milk (and optional vanilla and cinnamon), and then stir into the grits. You can serve as-is, or cover and cook again for 2 additional minutes for a creamier consistency.

Serve hot with a drizzle of maple syrup.

Brown sugar grits

This is a great recipe for cool fall days. Fills up hungry bellies with very little prep time. Great for having it ready after school as well if kids need to grab their own snack while waiting for parents to get home. I like easy so this is one we will be making over and over again.

Grits are a food made from corn that is ground into a coarse meal and then boiled. Hominy grits are a type of grits made from hominy with the germ removed, which is corn that has been treated with an alkali in a process called nixtamalization.

  1. I have never made or eaten grits but yours look really good. I need to give them a try, reminds be a bit of oatmeal. Being able to cook them in the Instant Pot while you sleep and wake up to a hot breakfast that is ready to go is key on those busy mornings.

    I saw grits in the South on the breakfast menu but didn’t like the look of them at all. Yours look much better but I’m sure that porridge with brown sugar and maple syrup tastes better to me.
