Projects you Should Consider for Updating the look of your Home

Your home is your castle. It’s the place you should feel the most comfortable, and it’s the place that likely has the most monetary value to you. In other words, it’s a place that you should do your very best to care for so that you can get the most out of it.

Maintaining your home will help extend its life, but updating your home will improve your enjoyment of it and increase its value. Some updates can be quite labor-intensive and costly, so it’s important that you choose the updates that will make the most impact.

Here are some of the best projects you should consider for updating the look of your home this year:

Lighting

Lighting can change the way a room looks and feels. More lighting can make a room look more open and more inviting. Different lighting fixtures can also change the ambiance of a room, making it feel moodier or more romantic if the lighting is dim or brighter and more engaging if it is brighter. The style of the fixtures can also influence the decor.

While you can pick out the lighting you like, it is important that you don’t try to install your own lighting fixtures. Doing so requires working with electrical wiring, and that is best left to the professionals. Making a mistake could put your safety and your home in jeopardy. Everything might seem fine at first, but a mistake in the wiring can cause a short or a fire some time down the road. That’s a risk you shouldn’t take.

Painting

Painting is a job you can do yourself, and it is one of the least expensive ways to update your home. Just get a gallon or two of paint and a few rollers and brushes, and you can transform the look of a room. Imagine how different your living room with stark, white walls would look if you suddenly painted it black. You aren’t likely to make such a drastic change, but the point is that simply changing the colors of the walls can make a big difference.

Likewise, painting the outside of your house a new color can have a big impact. However, you may want to hire the professionals for that job since the siding and the trim can get pretty high up, even on a one-story house.

Siding

Siding can transform the look of the outside of your house in a way that a simple repaint can’t do. Imagine how your plain, clapboard sided home would look if it was covered in vinyl siding? Or how your brick ranch would look if it had wood shake instead? Adding siding or changing the type of siding you have can makeover the look of your home.

Installing siding is a complicated job that can also get dangerous. The higher the sides of your home, the greater the risk when installing siding. Hire a professional to ensure that you get proper installation and the job is done safely. Remember that any mistakes made in the installation of siding can allow water to get into your home, causing damage and allowing the spread of mold. Hire a professional to avoid this risk.

Windows

Windows control the natural light in your home. Change the windows and change the lighting in each room. Imagine how much more open and inviting your home would look with large, picture windows in every room.

The design of the windows can also change the way your home looks, both inside and out. Just think about how different a large window looks with plain glass or stained glass. You can influence design with the materials, type of glass, and other details you choose for your new windows.

Updating your home can make you feel excited about your home again — almost like you have bought a whole new property. Updating the right things can also improve the value of your home. If you are on a budget, talk with a realtor or a contractor about what upgrades would make the most impact on your home, both in its value and in how you enjoy it. Always work with the professionals who can get the best results while ensuring the safety of your home and your family.
