We had a baby! A baby Alpaca that is

Lets have some happy in our feeds today!

It has been almost a year since we started our little hobby farm. We have a variety of animals including alpacas. When we got them we were told one may be pregnant but nothing for sure. In the time since we got the original five, we added another female to the herd. She is so pretty, our male had to be separated as he woudl not leave her alone.

Almost a year has passed since they came to live with us and not knowing the whole alpaca pregnancy calendar we assumed none were expecting. They really do not show and it is difficult to tell. Our male has been in his own area with other herd animals since October.

Turns out alpacas are pregnant for almost a year. So we may still have some babies on the way. We are on cria alert (baby alpaca). And watching closely for any signs of labour. One is showing signs but it could still be a could of weeks. We will see what happens.

Now back to our baby 🙂

Shortly after we received our original five alpacas we noticed one had a growth in her nose. The growth grew so fast we had to get a vet out to do an emergency surgery on it. She could not breath and it turned out to be cancerous. So thankful we had the vet look at it when he did. Turns out this pretty lady was actually pregnant and is the one that had our newest addition.

Baby alpacas are so cute!

We really were shocked to see the baby cria in the field one day after we had all been away. Both baby and mama are doing well and the rest of the herd is loving the newest addition.

Mama’s name is Star so we named this little girl Comet. My husband thinks she looks like a baby reindeer with beautiful lashed eyes and wanted to name her Clarice.

As you can see baby is eating and doing well! Mama is as well and we are so happy she got the care she needed back int eh fall as it not only saved her, but this little cutie as well.

Comet is three weeks old and loves to run after chickens. Hopefully she will have another friend born soon. Since the dad is all white, we are excited for the other alpacas to have a fluffy white cria. I will be sure to keep you posted.
