5 Things to do in Kamloops on a Hot Day #ExploreKamloops

Summertime in British Columbia gets hot! Being a redhead I do love summer but try to avoid being out in the sun as much as possible. So I try to find things to do indoors while the day is at its hottest. Recently we enjoyed a girls weekend away in Kamloops and had the opportunity to enjoy a mixture of indoor activities and evening events. It was a great weekend and has me seeing the area in a different way. I had no idea the art community was so rich in the city!

If you visit Kamloops on a hot day or a smokey day, here are some fun things you can do with the family.

1.Head to the pool

Tournament Capital Centre has a great pool for families. This Canada Olympic games pool has something for everyone. With lots of change rooms, lockers and viewing seats, this pool is a great place to hang out and escape the heat.

My daughter loved the waterslide and diving platform. She was really brave and climbed to the highest possible spot to jump into the pool. There was lots of parking and a great spot for younger kids to play. Parents can join in or sit close by and watch everything.

2.Take an art class

Tap into your inner artist and get creative at this fun spot with workshops available daily.

We attended a fairy inspired class and each got to make our own princess. The staff is super friendly and patient in this fun environment. My daughter made Snow white and I made a ginger princess. The step by step instructions from our instructor made it such a fun and easy process. We even bought a kit to take home.

Workshops are available for adults and families. You can plan a girls night out or a birthday party here. This is a great spot to spend a few hours while trying to stay cool this summer. CHeck out their website for upcoming themes and schedules 4cats.com

3.Explore science

Who doesn’t love to play around with science? One of the best things about being a parent is watching your children as they learn.

Explore, learn and discover at this fun and interactive science centre. The BIG Little Science centre is located in an old school and is full of fun learning opportunities for kids and adults. With so many hands on displays and passionate staff that help you play and learn, this is a great spot to hang out for the afternoon.

When the weather is not cooperating kids have energy to burn. I love that they encourage everyone to touch the exhibits. Audience participation is encouraged during presentations as well. This is a great place to hang out and have fun while learning.

While we were there we asked about the tank full of walking sticks. The staff were so kind they took one out and showed the children them up-close while answering all their questions.

4. Go for a train ride

Nights seem to be a better time to be outside when it is hot and smokey. So many families head outside and enjoy time outdoors. Kamloops Heritage Railway is a fun time for all ages.

Let Kamloops Heritage Railway take you on a journey back in time aboard the 2141! Witness the infamous Billy Miner train robbery that played a significant role in Kamloops’ history. No matter what the season this historic steam train has a fun and entertaining ride for you. It is just over an hour long with non stop entertainment. You can walk freely around the train exploring and asking the crew questions. They are happy to answer and fill you in on the trains history.

The Kamloops Heritage Railway Society is a registered charity under the Societies act. KHR has a mandate to operate the steam engine 2141, the “Spirit of Kamloops” for the public, on behalf of the City of Kamloops.

5 Take in an event or go out to eat

No matter what your interest or who you are traveling with, there is lots to do in Kamloops! With many events going on in the evening when it is a bit cooler, you will love getting out with the family. Check out Tourism Kamloops for the current events schedule.

We were visiting during a hot smokey weekend and found it to be much cooler at night.

One thing nobody likes to do during summer month is cook and heat up the house. There are no shortage of restaurants for all tastes and budgets in Kamloops. Many places have live entertainment as well. We had the pleasure of eating at Bold Pizzeria and were so happy! The owners are super nice and the food is amazing!

The thin crust pizza is prepared fresh out where you can watch the creation being made. Even my picky eater loved eating there and enjoyed a Smores Creme Brule for dessert. Indulge in a thin crust, hand-rolled, pizza cooked in an Italian inspired wood oven. Unique ingredients that are Traditional to Italy.

If you are looking for something on the lighter side and in a more artsy setting, head on over to The Art We Are cafe (next to 4 Cats studio). A locally owned Cafe located downtown Kamloops that highlights local artisan works. Check out local art, listen to live music and enjoy the company of family and friends while eating baked cooked, fresh iced teas, and wraps.

My daughter and her friend loved leaving a note for the staff to read in the brick wall as many before then did.

Next time you are heading to Kamloops, don;t let a little heat or smoke ruin your weekend. There is lots to do inside all year long for the whole family!

Disclosure- I was a guest of tourism Kamloops and the above mentioned companies hosted our experience. As always, all opinions are my own.
