It isn’t exactly a news flash to say that your gastrointestinal tract is critical to your health – it moves your food from your mouth down to your stomach, then it changes that food into stored energy and absorbable nutrients, and then removes the waste from your system. If you don’t get the right nutrients, you can die. Easy peasy.

Probiotics can help. There are lots of probiotic supplements on the market. There is even a rice-based probiotic drink. These can help maintain the proper balance of good and bad bacteria in your gut so that you can remain healthy. This is great for people with a variety of health conditions that include things like antibiotic-associated diarrhea and inflammatory bowel disease.

When it comes to your gut, it influences more than just the natural function of going to the bathroom. The microbiome of the gut is unique to each individual, but there are still things that remain the same regardless of the person. In people who are healthy, there should be a vast array of different organisms. In people who aren’t so healthy, there’s quite a bit less of that diversity, and this leads to an increase in the bacteria that are associated with disease. Because of this, keeping your gut healthy is incredibly important.

Some gut bacteria work to fight inflammation, but other types promote inflammation. When your gut is working properly, these opposite kinds of bacteria should cancel each other out. However, when the delicate balance is off, the inflammation-promoting bacteria can gain control and make metabolites that will pass right through the lining of your gut and get into your bloodstream, which then spreads inflammation to various parts of your body.

What Affects It?

When it comes to gut health, it’s obvious that the types of foods you ingest play a big role in the bacteria that live in the gut, but there are also other factors involved like your oral health too. Did you know that fully chewing your food can help your gut health? It’s true. Once you let your teeth do the breaking down of food they are made for the gut can focus on absorption and processing, putting less stress on your internal organs to break down fully bites you swallowed without much chewing. In addition, thoroughly brush your teeth and use quality toothpaste, no matter the kind! Even the Mayo Clinic points out the fact that your mouth health can be a good snapshot of overall health for an individual. 

Another one of these other factors is how you were born. Babies who had a natural birth tend to have microbiomes that are more diverse than those who were delivered by C-section. This is thought to be due to them being exposed to a variety of different bacteria as they’re in the birth canal. Another factor is whether or not they were breastfed.

However, the environment we grow up in also plays a role. As a society, we tend to be too clean. Being exposed more to bacteria and germs, within reason, can work to strengthen our microbiomes. Kids should play outside and with animals, dig in the dirt, all of these things are good for them. They’ll assist them with establishing a gut that’s healthy.

Health Issues

When your gut’s microbiome gets out of whack for one reason or another, you’ll know it. Things like nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, and bloating are all good signs that something’s not right in your gut. Usually, these imbalances will correct themselves, but if they turn into chronic issues, they’ll need to be medically diagnosed and then treated. 

With us knowing so very much about the microbiome that is our gut, there’s still untold amounts of information that isn’t yet known about them. Because of this, you should stick with the basics when it comes to getting and maintaining a healthy gut. Keep in mind that the best thing you can do is to maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet. If something is good for you, then the chances are good that it’s also good for your gut.
