How To Instill Healthy Eating Habits In Your Children

Nowadays with childhood obesity on the rise it is very important to promote healthy eating habits in your household. Kids are like little sponges, they can learn so much just by being immersed in a certain environment, so talking about food in a healthiful manner is of utmost significance for their upbringing. By instilling a healthy relationship with food you will be making sure that your child will have a normal growth and that they will more easily maintain a healthy weight during their adult life. Eat meals together

In order to teach your child about proper meal times it is very important to share meals as a family. Realistically it is not possible to have every single meal together, but try to eat as a unit as often as you can – at least once a day. While you are joined to share the wonders of a home cooked meal, you should make sure that this experience is pleasant for all parties. If you and your partner argue during the meal there is a possibility that your child will associate eating with a stressful situation and would like to avoid it.

Bring your child grocery shopping

Another great way to teach your youngster about nutrition is to bring them grocery shopping with you. This way they will be able to see you make healthy choices in the supermarkets. You can also make it more fun for both you and your kid by making a game out of shopping. You may quiz them on certain things such as what is the healthiest rice to choose from or which produce grows on trees and which is a root. By teaching them about produce and nutrition they will be set to make their own healthy choices as adults.

Invite them to prepare food with you

Kids adore being involved in things they associate with adulthood such as cooking. Preparing meals together may even be one of their most cherished memories when they grow up. By giving them age appropriate tasks around the kitchen they will learn how to appreciate meals more since they’ll know how it came to be. Also, it is more likely that your child will eat the whole plate of food if they have been involved in the process of making it.

Discourage eating in front of the electronics

Eating in front of the TV is one of the most widespread ways of having meals around the world. However, it can be detrimental to the formation of hunger cues. If your child is used to eating in front of the TV or a tablet they may get more interested in the digital world and subconsciously forget about what they’re eating. If this turns into a lifelong habit it may lead to overeating and obesity.

Don’t use food as a parenting tool

Unfortunately, a lot of parents are guilty of using food as either a punishment or a reward or both. If you’re trying to punish your child for their bad behaviour by restricting certain foods they may see that food as a forbidden fruit making them binge on it when they have a chance. Conversely, if you reward your child for cleaning up their plate by giving them candy or a dessert they may internalize that practice too, making them think that sweets are more important than a balanced meal. Also, sometimes your child will just be full after only eating half a meal and that’s nothing to be angry at them about.
